Behold, a Creator of More Sticks!

There is something fascinating about the mother of sticks, the stump. This former tree has seen things, many dark and terrible things. It’s probably seen it all, from high winds, floods, and fire. What finally brought about the slow demise of this eroding landmark?

My spouse is a little concerned about my fascination with all things sticks. I mean, they’re just the broken ruins of a tree, right?

“Right?” asks the hawk, who sits upon what will one day be a stick ripe for photographing.

You can even see a few sticks in the making clinging to the branch, although not for long. The next good wind will drive them back to the Earth, where the cycle of life will begin once again.

Food for thought. Just don’t become food for the hawk.

All birbs that show up on this blog are birbs regardless of species. Birbs are birbs are birbs. If you want to identify this birb, you can reference Cooper’s hawks and sharp-shinned hawks. It’s one of those two. Maybe. Possibly. (No, I don’t want you to identify the birb.)

This charred stick persists! But it has seen better days.

Sticks

I have questions about this stick. First, who or what flipped it over? When I first took the picture of this find, I questioned the charring, but on a later leg of our hike, we found the original tree, which had clearly seen better days.

This charred stick had made quite the journey to its current location. Had rain, perhaps, flipped it over? The hill it’s slowly progressing down definitely has had evidence of flooding from the rains.

Sticks are mysterious, and this is part of the joy of photographing them.

In places where wildfires are common, forests have adapted to needing fires to thrive. Some plants simply won’t germinate without these fires. Nature is a pretty amazing thing.

I found a Creator of Sticks! Joyous day!

Creator of Sticks, Sticks

On today’s episode of I Found a Stick, I made many mistakes. I decided, for some reason, that it would be a good idea to venture off the beaten path in search of sticks. Under the blazing sun, after noon.

So many mistakes were made, but the walk was most fruitful, and many glorious sticks were located. This Creator of Sticks was nestled in a beautiful, hilly field strew with yellow, orange, and purple wildflowers. Curious ground squirrels eyed me and my spouse when we passed them on the trail.

Beauty happens in the strangest places. This time, it was in death in a field, surrounded by evidence of life.

Fun fact: the trail we hiked to find many sticks was only 1.8 miles, but my spouse and I were almost slain by the hill. We are trying to be “healthy” and “active”, and we’re quickly coming to terms with we are neither healthy nor active… but we are trying.

A fly and its stick: a love story

In reality, the stick does not love the fly, and the fly couldn’t care less about the stick, but it made for an amusing headline. I suppose their love story ended in tragedy after approximately fifteen seconds. This might count as the shortest relationship ever.

Sometimes, half the fun is creating strange little stories about what might have been.

I suspect a stick and bug relationship would only work if the bug was using the stick as a third wheel or an accessory for its bug-on-bug action.

This may come as a relief, but I have not written a book (yet) with a focus on bugs, so I’ll just link to this one because I like it. Disclaimer: I wrote the book.

Fun fact: this fly has a red butt, which means it may be a flesh fly. I have zero knowledge or interest in bugs, but this one was a cool bug because he was flying around the sticks, so I took a picture of it.

… I would have taken a picture of the sticks even without the fly, but since the fly was there anyway, why not?

This lizard found a stick! It is his happy place.

Lizards with Sticks, Sticks

I wear glasses. Sometimes, these glasses do not help me see things. I found this stick! I was so excited I found this stick of exceptional size and beauty. Simply put, it is the perfect stick. While some might call this stick “a log”, the lizard lounging on it prefers to think of it as a lounge chair.

It wasn’t until I got home that I discovered the lizard had found the stick first. To be fair to me, my sunglasses were tinted to its darkest, my spouse wanted me to hurry up because he was tired, and I was more than a little tired from the hike.

No matter. I got the best of both worlds. I got a stick and a lizard.

Clearly, the lizard wanted to know what I was about, but this is the bravest lizard to be seen on my walk today. Good job, buddy. You’re a great lizard.

The hike to find this stick was a quality 2.43 miles, and it was well worth every step!

Fun fact: my spouse told me I could not adopt every lizard in the park. I wanted to. I mean, these guys are adorable. They’re also tiny, coming in between 3-6 inches from nose to tip of tail. The cute gets me every damned time.

A crow meets a lonely stick (in training)!

This crow, though. So, there I was, taking a nice hike along the Coyote Peak trail not far from where I live. My husband spots the crow eating a dead fish while floating on a stick. (There will be a future post of this lovely stick and the crow’s most excellent taste in sticks later.)

The crow takes flight, and since I’d already been graced with a picture of a crow sharing interest in the same stick, I decided to grab some shots of it flying off. Behold! The crow decided to do a flyby of this most excellent stick-in-training.

The reservoir we hiked around had plenty of sticks, with an ample selection of sticks-in-training.

Fun Fact: this American crow was doing its best to disguise itself as a fish crow. Alas, fish crows do not typically live in my region, but it was a delight seeing this doing crow things.
